In mid-2020, proceedings were launched regarding the violation of the privacy of users from the European Union by Meta. According to the results of the investigation, Meta has breached the provisions of the GDPR. The article allows the transfer of user data to member states, provided that the data is secured. However, it has been proven that personal data was transferred to the United States, and additionally, the security measures during the transfer of information were not sufficient.

As a result of breaking the GDPR, the European Union imposed a fine of 1.2 billion of euro on Meta. This is currently the highest fine for breaking these regulations. Until now, the infamous record holder was Amazon. In addition, Meta will not be able to continue transferring user data from Europe to the United States. The company has announced that it will appeal against the decision.
