Matter of system updates depends on the phone manufacturer. There are companies like OnePlus that attach great importance to regular system updates and quick error repairs, and there are also companies like Samsung that work on implementing new versions of the system for a very long time. This situation is unacceptable for Google. Company from the USA really wants to release regular security updates for every phone with Android system on the market, but it seems to be difficult to enforce. Despite this, Google is trying to take the gauntlet and force other companies to regularly update the software on their devices.
One of the solutions aimed at improving the release of Android updates is the Treble project, which must be compulsorily supported by all phones with Android 8 or newer. Treble project allows to separate in the system parts of the software associated with the user interface created by manufacturer and the part responsible for the "clean" Android system, and this separation allows for easier creation of updates. In addition, Google announced a new regulation that will come into force on 31th of January 2019. From that day, all popular phones that will appear on the market will have to receive security updates at the latest every 90 days. What's important, by "popular devices" term Google means devices which have been activated in a number of at least 100 000 copies. If companies won't comply with Google's orders, there is a chance that the American giant may even prevent companies from releasing new phones in the future.
