The European headquarters of Facebook is located in Ireland. That’s why this specific department of the American giant is controlled by the Irish Data Protection Commission. It turns out that it noticed certain violations of general European Union law. This resulted in a gigantic penalty being imposed on Facebook.

IDPC fined Facebook 225 million of euro for violating the GDPR clause. This breach occurred in the case of data of users using WhatsApp, which was bought by Facebook a few years ago. This case lasted from 2018 and during it court proved, inter alia, that WhatsApp did not provide users with the method of collecting data, as well as the place of their storage. It is possible, however, that the imposition of the penalty is not the end of the whole problem, as Facebook has announced an appeal against the judgment. According to the company, the announced verdict is "entirely disproportionate".
