The use of non-cash payments with a smartphone is becoming an increasingly popular solution. However, companies care about creating their own proprietary services, hence smartphones have different payment methods. The most popular systems used for cashless payments are Google Pay and Apple Pay. Samsung Pay is in third place, but it is the presence of this system in Samsung's phones that caused a recently announced court ruling to prohibit Samsung from selling some of its phones in Russia.

A Russian court decided that the Samsung Pay system infringes the patent rights obtained by Sqwin SA. This patent was confirmed in 2019 and the latest court decision prohibits Samsung from selling phones using Samsung Pay, which in practice means that Samsung will not be able to sell its flagship smartphones on the Russian market, including phones such as Galaxy Z Fold 3 or Galaxy Z Flip 3. It is worth remembering that the judgment is not legally binding at the moment and Samsung has announced an appeal against the announced judgment.
