It could have been expected that the global crisis caused by the coronavirus pandemic would strongly affect the sales of smartphones. Reports from the first quarter of this year situation on mobile market have already appeared on the Internet. Counterpoint Research has published its analyzes that are not very optimistic for phone manufacturers.
The total number of phones sold worldwide in the quarter fell below 300 million units for the first time since 2014. To be more accurate, 295 million smartphones were sold in the first quarter of 2020, which translates into a decrease of 13% compared to the first quarter of 2019. Despite declines in sales, Samsung still dominates the market, and Huawei came second in terms of the number of phones sold despite problems between China and the United States. It is noteworthy that two companies managed to increase the number of phones sold compared to the first quarter of 2019. These are Xiaomi (from 27.8 million to 29.7 million phones sold) and Realme (from 2.8 to 7.2 million smartphones sold). Manufacturers must be aware that falls in the second quarter of 2020 will be even greater and naturally this will be caused by advanced state of the pandemic around the world.
