In September 2020, YouTube launched the Shorts service. It is a part of the portal, which by default is to be a direct competitor of the fastest growing social networking site - TikTok. In this section of YouTube, authors can post short recordings lasting up to 60 seconds. In such recordings, authors can make some basic changes to the video, such as adding filters, changing the color of the recording, or changing the soundtrack. However, YouTube Shorts is constantly being upgraded and a new feature is to be added to the service soon.

In the code of the latest beta version of the application, a mention was found about the possibility of adding your own voiceover to the uploaded recordings. Until now, you could only upload a video with the original soundtrack or replace the audio layer of the recording with songs made available by YouTube. It was also possible to use third-party applications to modify the recording before uploading it, but from now on, the dedicated YouTube Shorts application will allow you to change the sound of the video. This is another aspect where Shorts will be similar to TikTok, as TikTok also has the option to add original audio layer to the recording. So far, we do not know when this function will officially be added to YouTube Shorts for all users.
