The current standard when it comes to component lithography are the 7nm and 5nm standards (which include, among others, A14 from Apple or Snapdragon 888 from Qualcomm). However, companies are constantly working on improving components and almost all giants devote a lot of attention to the development of the 2nm process. The TSMC company announced openly a year ago that the proprietary unit created in the 2nm process will probably be presented only in 2025. It turns out that the first company that boasted about creating a chip created in 2nm lithography is IBM. It is the first chip in the world created with this technology.

This event may turn out to be a breakthrough in the near future. In the official announcement on the IBM website, we can read that the new chip allows for a 45% performance jump and a 75% reduction in energy demand compared to the currently used 7nm chips. As potential benefits of the use of 2nm processors, IBM lists factors such as increasing the lifetime of phones, thanks to which charging will be needed only every 4 days, or a significant acceleration of laptops. It is worth mentioning, however, that the mass production of units in the 2nm process will not take place in the near future and we will have to wait a long time for the use of such processors in flagship devices.
